Show Day Report for 2011

113th Bishop Wilton Show 2011 - Post Show Review

Bishop Wilton Show Committee would like to give a huge thank-you to all Vice Presidents, Members , Sponcors, Visitors, and Competitors for their continuing support through-out the years.

Show day proved to be the wettest day of the year to date, but this did not dampen the spirits. We had in excess of 700 on the field entering either as pre-paid, Vice Presidents, Members or paying public. When considering the conditions, we all thought it was an amazing turn out on the day; Show spirits remained high, an almost Dunkirk Spirit prevailed. Normal Show day attendance is approx 2000.

Looking at the content of the Show, we had a great turn out of entries in the horticultural tent with some fantastic produce classes. Considering the date of the Show entries were well up,   we hope this will continue for years to come. The WI was also a strong area with the ever growing photographic classes being a real attraction, not to mention all the food classes and hand crafts. Again good entries were received on the day.

The marathon was at full force with over 400 taking part; conditions proved to be quite good, but some runners commented about the roads being a little slippery, which was understandable.

The horse classes again proved strong with real commitment from Mountain & Moorland and Horse Jumping Competitors who lasted the day. A very special thanks to all horse class entrants; many said “BWS had gone to a lot of effort putting on the Show, we want to stay and support your event even though it‟s a wet one! ” No-one got stuck with a horse box due to a tractor being on standby all day at the main gate.

Due to popular demand we had the terrier racing along with a falconry display.

The Children‟s tent was full; a special thanks goes to Bishop Wilton School and all the hard work of the children and teachers. The craft tent was full even though it was slightly larger and most stands commented that they did good trade on the day and would return next year.
One area we were not happy with was the members' and public bar; unfortunately they did not meet the requirements of the tender agreement, but this has been acknowledged and will be corrected for next year.

Improvements to the Show included the entrance system, this we changed from paying as you drive in, to parking your car and paying as you walk on to the mian field, thus redusing any queueing  and congestion problems on the road. We felt it made the whole process easier, we would like to know your thoughts on the matter, so please mention it to any of the committee members, email us or leave a comment.

Cars and vintage vehicles were down on the day but perhaps that was understandable due to the weather conditions. We hope to keep the tug-of-war going and we hope to get more involvement from the Young Farmers.

Looking ahead we will have the BWS AGM in late Oct/early Nov. We will be able to provide an accurate set of figures for this year‟s Show day, but we can 100% confirm that the 114th Show will take place on 21st July 2012.

Many thanks again to everyone involved in Bishop Wilton Show especially on build-up week and we can look forward to another great Show day.
